Postmodern shopping - Get the look

In my previous post, I touched on a few hints of Memphis in the COQ hotel. Today I'm elaborating on the concept of PoMo and Memphis style.

A new crop of Postmodern ("PoMo", ugh) and Memphis influenced furniture and decor has been popping up in the last few years. But before you cringe, think of the aforementioned design movements as subtle references rather than all out cartoonism in recent modern design. If you're in need of an injection of fresh design energy into your home, take a look at the photos below as an example. Your artfully arranged succulents and plants, scandinavian furniture, and midcentury architecture look new again with the addition of some different shapes and styles. It's all in the mix.

Curious about how exactly these design movements have been reflected in the more minimal versions above, I reviewed a few tenets of postmodernism and Memphis style to see how they applied to the more tasteful, modern iterations. Let's review some of them:

1. Asymmetrical and unconventional shapes, awkward angles and experiments in scale, overtly geometric shapes

2. Bold forms constructed from simplistic shapes like a child's building set, tinkertoy and lincoln log silhouettes

3. Freedom to experiment, with a dose of humor injected into modernist ideals

4. Bold, clashing, or vivid colors

5. Graphic black and white patterns

6. Symbolic and historic references, past motifs

7. Varied mix of materials and textures

Many of these principles can be seen in the items below.
